These pictures were taken on photo shoot day in the back garden. That’s why my last few posts look identical.

I’ve used the Henna Art Cotton Lawn from @sistermintaka

This top is amazing! It has amazing shoulder fins. I have no idea what the technical term is for them, but they look epic. The pattern is a really interesting one and the construction was interesting too.
There were areas that made me a little confused. A few of the pattern pieces are split into two to have a front and back, like the fins and the area under the arms. I did wonder whether it would have been simpler to have some of those pieces joined up. It might have made the sewing process slightly quicker. This was a pretty speedy make though. I spent a bit of extra time sewing row of stitches in the fins. I was inspired by the gorgeous plain grey sample by @sewingandthecity
Perhaps I didn’t need to add those rows of stitches to such a busy fabric, but I did enjoy sewing them.

The weather is currently a bit too cool to wear this. Perhaps I should have made the full sleeve version. Either way, I have a lovely top ready for when the weather gets warmer 😊

I would say that the pattern may not be suitable for beginners. The level of skill required isn’t high, but the instructions and diagrams were a bit confusing in places.

All in all, I’m happy with the top and I’d like to make it again

(I’ve just spotted that you can see the hives on my arms. It was a pretty cold day when I took these pictures, so the cold trigged my urticaria. Thankfully they disappeared after I got warm and had some piriton. I thought I’d add this note in to explain what those bumps were.)

It’s been almost a week since I sewed anything, so I’m here to share some pictures of this other jacket that I made early this year. This is a variation of the Zesty Jacket that I made.

I used a Taos Flannel from @sistermintaka and the fabric is being restocked next week!

I’d dreamt about this jacket for so long which is why I had to make a wearable toile first, just to make sure that I was happy with the style.

I did make a couple of changes between this version and the green one. I needed a bit more ease around the hips so I made the bodice pieces wider, especially at the front. I straightened off the front edge, as the on the first version the collar didn’t sit well.

I had hoped to add some sort of pocket to this jacket, but I was too scared to add welt pockets as I didn’t have enough fabric to fix the jacket if it went wrong. I didn’t have enough fabric left for patch pockets either. I had hoped to do inseam pockets and use the facing as part of the pocket bag, but when it came to sewing that area my brain couldn’t work out how to do it.

I’ve worn the jacket a few times now, and I keep reaching to put my hand in the inseam pocket, but it doesn’t exist. I’d like to go back and unpick the side seams and see if I can make it work.

It’s not quite the perfect pattern but I’ll happy wear this jacket for years and years to come!

I’ve also taken pictures of my dad in this jacket so I might share those at some point too!

Also I have to say a big thanks to my dad @gsandhuphotography for being patient with me, and taking a big batch of pictures. I tried on about 4 different things one afternoon and he kindly photographed them all.

I managed to take some pictures of my recent makes

I managed to take some pictures of my recent makes a few weeks ago, before we had all that snow. I thought now would be a good time to share them as I haven’t done any sewing for a few days.

This jacket is my wearable toile of a self drafted jacket. It’s based on a vintage jacket that I’ve got and love so much. The original jacket is like a blanket and it’s simply finished with a blanket stitch, so there’s no facing on it.

For my own version I had to work out how to draft the facing. I’m very pleased that it worked successfully. The facing goes from the collar down to the hem.
I had hoped to create a large enough facing so that it could also act a pocket bag or pocket facing for an inseam pocket or a welt pocket, but I didn’t have enough fabric so I couldn’t test this out.

This zesty jacket is lightweight and it could be fun to wear in spring or summer. I don’t like the styling in these pictures and I won’t wear this as an outfit.
I can picture it worn with light blue denim shorts and a white top or something like that.

As a last minute alteration, I added a button loop and button up band to act as a cuff. This isn’t something that I’d go on to add for my next version, but it worked well for this fabric, as the fabric was so lightweight. I think the stripe on the cuff just adds a little bit of extra interest.

I know the overall look is giving a slightly butchers jackets vibe but I think that’s down to the fabric choice. Hopefully I will get some wear out of this eventually.
It’s not something that feels very me, but I am definitely proud of it because it all fit together and it’s proof that my pattern worked! 🥳

I was naughty and decided to try on my wrap dress,

I was naughty and decided to try on my wrap dress, even though I said I wouldn’t.
Something in my brain clicked as I fastened the loop and button at the waistline, I had a lightbulb moment! What if I sewed elastic and button at the neckline?

I tested it, adjusted it, tweaked it, until I found this! I’ve added a small loop of elastic on the under wrap, and on the upper wrap I’ve added a button. You can place the button at the centre front where the wraps will cross and place the loop below that, so that the elastic stretches upwards slightly. This button and loops combination allows the wrap to move as I move, yet it keeps the wrap from gaping open. I’ve only tested this out for a few minutes and I think it works.

I’m going to remove my red basting stitches and sew these in properly. Once I’ve done that, I’ll wear the dress for a day and see how I get on. I do think that this is going to work!

If it does, I’m going to go and buy a tonne more of that skinny elastic so I can add the loops and buttons to all of the millions of wrap dresses that I plan to make! 😀

And that’s a wrap! I am done with wraps for a good while. I’m going to go back to making things that work for me. I’ve got to the point where I’d rather do my accounts than keep working on wrap dresses! 😂

It’s disappointing because the Hannah Dress is such an enjoyable sew and I’d love to make millions of them! I know a big part of me wants to make wrap dresses work, so I’ll probably come back to it at some point.

Out of curiosity I thought I’d do a quick toile of a vogue wrap dress pattern that I already had... as you can see in slide two, it was massive! I cannot be bothered to fix it and work on it. Maybe there’s another indie pattern out there that will work for me, or maybe I’ll learn to draft my own. Either way, none of those things are going to happen any time soon.

The good thing about wrap dresses is that they’re a timeless classic, so I can come back to it whenever. There’s no rush 😊

I’m putting this out there so that I really do commit to leaving it alone for a while. It will do me good to work on something that I can start and finish. I need to feel a sense of achievement and I’m just not getting it with this project at the moment.

I’m not sure what I’ll work on next. Whatever it is, it will hopefully be simpler than this!

Ooh and one last thing. I’ve just realised that it was only a couple of days ago that I made two successful projects in a row! I need to remind myself that I have achieved some great things and I should focus on things I’ve done, rather than the things I haven’t done.

I’m not having the best time with this wrap dres

I’m not having the best time with this wrap dress. The second slide on this post is a weird one, I’m basically flashing you. You’ll be pleased to know that I haven’t showed you the most flashing point! If I pull the wrap over from the bottom corner, the dresses flashes a lot. If I pull the wrap from higher up the bodice, the less it flashes. I just can’t find that right spot where it doesn’t flash too much, and it doesn’t look ridiculously high.

I think I need to follow @emmas_atelier advice about trying to make it in the style of the #zadiejumpsuit where ties from either side of the wrap get tied up at the centre back. That will pull everything close to my chest.

I think if I go down that route then I will go back to the size 16 and do an FBA. If those wraps are being pulled to the centre back and there’s too much ease, then the bust to waist darts will get pulled towards the back too. So if I size down and reduce the ease, then the ties will just be there to keep the dress shut, rather than pull everything to the back. That’s the theory anyway...
I have no idea if I can get it to work.

I really really really want to get this wrap dress mastered because it’s so easy to make. I just need it to be wearable too.

I’ve tried looking for help drafting my own from my block, but none of the books seem to show me how to do it. They all have fancy over the top versions of a wrap dress with weird extra details.

I’ll give it one more try and then I’ll give up.
