How to knit the BamBam hat

Do you want to know how to knit the fabulous, simple and cosy Bam Bam Hat? Well then look no further for the free pattern!

Before we begin I have a small note to make about the hat, well the ribbing section actually. I was supposed to knit 1, purl 1, and repeat, across Rows 2 – 8, but I made a few errors. Don’t worry though, my hat still worked and so I’ve decided to share exactly what I did do in that ribbing section. If you prefer, you can substitute my alternative ribbing with just regular ribbing 🙂

THE BAM BAM HAT

EQUIPMENT

Yarn: West Yorkshire Spinners – 100% Jacobs yarn – Aran Thickness – Colour: Ecru
Needles: Pony Bamboo Needles – 7.00 mm and an extra needle for cable knitting (I used a metal 4.00 mm knitting needle)
Pom pom maker – 9cm diameter

ABBREVIATIONS

k = knit
k2tog = knit 2 together
sl = slip
sts = stitches
cn = cable needle

RIBBING

Cast on 74 stitches

Row 1: Knit all
Row 2: [Knit 1, Purl 1] repeat to the end of the row
Row 3: [Purl 1, Knit 1] repeat to the end of the row
Row 4: [Purl 1, Knit 1] repeat to the end of the row
Row 5: [Knit 1, Purl 1] repeat to the end of the row
Row 6: [Purl 1, Knit 1] repeat to the end of the row
Row 7: [Knit 1, Purl 1] repeat to the end of the row
Row 8: [Knit 1, Purl 1] repeat to the end of the row
Row 9: [Purl to the front, knit to the back] repeat to the end of the row
Row 10: Knit all

CABLES

Row 11: Knit all
Row 12: Purl all
Row 13: Knit all
Row 14: Purl all
Row 15: [Knit 6, Slip 3 stitches to cable needle, hold in front, knit 3, knit 3 from cable needle] repeat 6 times, Knit 2

Row 17 – 28: Repeat Rows 11-16 twice

DECREASE

Row 33: Knit all
Row 34: Purl all
Row 35: [k1 k2tog k1, sl 3 sts to cn, hold in front, k3, k3 from cn] x 6, k2
Row 36: Purl row

Row 37: [K3tog, k6] x 6, k2
Row 38: Purl all
Row 39: Knit all

Row 48: Bind off

CLOSING THE TOP

Turn the hat inside out. Weave a piece of yarn horizontally through the last row, using a sewing needle, and pull the yarn tight, creating a drawstring effect. Knot the ends together. Use a piece of yarn and sew the edges together using an overcast seam.

OVERCASTING (Source: Vogue Knitting)

With the right sides of the pieces facing each other and the knots lined up, insert the needle from back to front through the strands at the edges of the pieces between the knots. Repeat this step.

CLOSING THE SIDE

Turn the hat back to the right side facing outwards. Use a mattress seam to join the sides together.

If you want more from your hat, then go wild and add a pom pom! I picked up a Pom Pom maker from Hobby Craft. There were 4 different size pom pom makers in the pack and all for only £4! Bargain 😀  I used the largest sized one on my hat.
